My big sister got married on Saturday.
Jason & I ended up not leaving middle Tennessee (or Middle Tennessee - around here, it's its own state) until Saturday morning. We drove to Daddy's - who was nice enough to share his hamburgers with us - then all got dressed and headed towards the big town of Carthage. Seriously - all I knew of Carthage was that little gas station we always stopped at for a bathroom break on the way to Jackson. It's actually a bigger town than I ever imagined. But I digress...
We got to the house which was totally brimming with people. I was a little nervous when we got there - yes, I know it's stupid, but it had been 1.5 years since I'd seen her and Kimberly. She doesn't look like the sister I remember. She's too skinny, her hair is blonde, and she has a tan. Yeah, if Daddy hadn't hugged her, I might not have even known her.
The wedding was in her friend's back yard outside of town, and she was running very late. The best man, Betsy, Jason & I headed over there in John Ray's truck (the best man - and quite a character. He could fill his own blog, I think) and I saw what may have been one of the funniest sights - a 2x4 with a plywood board sat at the end of the driveway announcing we had arrived at the wedding - in neon orange spray paint. Talk about your red-neck weddings!!
Thankfully, the back yard was absolutely gorgeously decorated. They had made the "aisle" leading toward an arch facing the pond. It really was pretty. And they had tables for food and drinks and cakes and of course, the fish - they had a fish fry for a reception. The fish was good, but I really wanted hush puppies and they didn't have any. I couldn't eat any of the cake because Susan put eggs in it - she said eggs were too expensive to waste any of them, so yes, there were yolks in her white cake. Which, by the way, was really nice. She's always been good at that.
My sister's aunts Fay & Dora showed up - they were the first guests (my dad's first wife's sister & sister-in-law, so yeah, they really aren't related to me at all). Then later, our Aunt Lavone (my mama's sister) came. I hadn't seen her in about 9 years, so that was good. Susan & Tina got there with the food, and Jason very graciously volunteered to help set stuff up - I was glad for this since I was stuck in the house trying to keep everyone on task; i.e. bossy! :)
Kimberly was the maid of honor; Eric & Kevin walked Betsy down the aisle. John Ray decided to strap his pistol to his belt just to be sure Steve didn't back out - it's frightening how many people kept saying they didn't expect him to go through with it. But he did. They're married now. They even jumped over the broom - a pretty cool tradition from Africa (at least that's where we think it originated), indicating the sweeping away of the old and bringing in the new life together. It was neat.
I left my camera in my car at Daddy's, so I was very glad I had my cool new phone. Unfortunately, I haven't taken the time to figure out how to get pictures off the phone and onto the computer, so as soon as I know that part, I'll post some pictures of all the festivities. It was a nice wedding (except for the humidity). As long as she's happy, I'm happy for her!
